The Artist

Artist Randy Griffin

Randy Griffin is an American impressionist painter and instructor with a studio in Oak Hill, Virginia.  Randy paints landscapes, waterscapes, still life, and occasional portraits.  Randy paints from life 'en plein aire' to captures the fleeting essence of a scene, detail missed in snap photography.  He can often be found in the gardens, along the waters, or appreciating our national monuments, brush in hand.  He paints quickly, often in several sessions, to capture the time or weather condition.

Primarily self-taught, he developed his impressionist painting style through close examination of the works of the impressionists and post-impressionists. ("How did they do that?").  His techniques are adapted from choices made by his favorites Claude Monet, Alfred Sisley, John Henry Twachtman, and John Singer Sargent, with rich brushwork and glazing techniques.  Like these masters, he may sacrifice an accurate line in favor of an atmosphere or effect.  In addition to this art study, he is a modern artist who employs technology to retain, frame and display images so he can extend his work in the field to the studio.

Born and raised near Boston, Massachusetts, he received a B.S. from University of Massachusetts.  He continues his studies privately, punctuated by occasional classes and field workshops.

Randy has shown works in many group exhibitions and one-man shows in Washington, D.C. and Virginia – occasionally negotiated canvases “freshly off the brush” while painting on site.  The presentation of his works in this on-line gallery website is his first effort to offer his art on the Internet. As such, many canvases in storage or hanging at his residence are offered now for the first time.

To inquire about any artwork appearing here, on Facebook or on his blog, please contact the studio directly. We are happy to answer your questions.  Commission, representation and gallery inquiries are welcome.

The Studio

Griffin Art Studios was organized as a business in 2013.  It's primary purpose is to operate a gallery and organize offerings (e.g., prints, cards, T-shirts, mouse pads) for the artist.  The studio represents Randy Griffin, provides an online gallery, organizes artist shows, and manages dealer relationships.  Interested resellers and suppliers should contact the studio.

The Griffin Art Studios on-line gallery website is a work-in-progress.  At initial release it is a fully functional e-commerce site enabling artwork display, selection and acquisition.  Content is dynamic.  Paintings will be added often, both from inventory and new works, and prints or note cards will be added (or can always be requested).   Given a design where main menu selections point to available works, over time sold items will move to the "View Sold Paintings" page (and not listed in the other catagories) or removed from the site. Consigned paintings will be removed or recatagorized.
